Fifty Shades Freed Overcomes the Competition

Over the weekend, the movie Fifty Shades Freed was unstoppable on its way to box office dominance. When you compare this movie with its predecessors, the opening weekend was the worst for the series. The other two movies that were released this weekend took the second and third place while Jumanji seems to have finally fallen.

Fifty Shades Freed, Peter Rabbit, and The 15:17 to Paris all opened in this order. Each movie opened well under the large budgets for these films. Given that Black Panther is coming out next week, these movies might not even get their budget back from box office receipts. Even though Winchester almost grossed $10 million in its first week the movie has dropped down to seventh. The movie will more than likely make less than $25 million in its box office run. Some horror movies just don’t work. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is slowing down and the movie is sitting at $888 million world-wide.

Weekend Top Five

5. The Greatest Showman $6.4 million

4. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle: $9.8 million

3. The 15:17 to Paris: $12.6 million

2. Peter Rabbit: $25 million

1. Fifty Shades Freed: $38.8 million

This past week has been great for movie trailers. We had a Deadpool 2 trailer, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Venom teaser. This Summer is looking to be one of the best years ever for the box office. Now like I have been saying for some time, Black Panther is coming out along with Early Man, and Samson. It should be an easy weekend for the newest Marvel franchise.
