E3 2019: Sniper Elite VR Preview

During my time at E3 2019, another game I had the chance to try was Sniper Elite VR. This spin on the Sniper Elite franchise from Rebellion Developments is a first-person shooter that takes being a sniper to a completely new level.

E3 2019 Sniper Elite VR Preview

Straight away, I have to say the game looked great running on a PlayStation VR. It wasn’t ridiculously detailed but it was definitely a step above many other VR games I’ve tried on the platform. Using the Aim Controller, shooting and reloading felt intuitive and immersive. Movement was a little different though.

Now, I never get sick playing a VR game, it has never even once remotely gotten to me -but I have to admit that this did. When I first started moving, I immediately had to steady myself and take some deep breaths. Fortunately, it didn’t get any worse than that and only really happened if I ran for extended periods of time. It’s also worth mentioning that once I went through a second time, it didn’t have as much of an effect on me. Turning was smooth and didn’t have any drastic effects.

This is a Sniper Elite game though – and that’s where what I played excelled. Handling the sniper rifle (or the submachine gun, but why would you use that?) feels great and the classic slow-motion shots upon piercing a shoulder, skull or groin played out with gruesome glee. I also have to praise just how well the motion tracking worked: I could crouch or lie down on the floor to make my character in game crouch or lie down, with almost no latency. This was by far my favorite part of the demo and I used it multiple times.

All in all, while it might need some polish (what I played was still a very early build) I think the promise here is extremely exciting and VR fans should be keeping a look out. There’s no exact release date at this time. Sniper Elite VR is coming to both PlayStation VR and PC VR platforms.
