NIS America has a demo out for Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony on PS4, Vita, and PC. This demo for the upcoming adventure game is available in both North America and Europe. According to NIS America, it is completely spoiler-free. Having played through it myself, I feel comfortable corroborating this statement. Shortly after starting, players can choose between Japanese and English voice acting.
While this demo takes place in the new game’s setting, it features a story that is clearly not canon. Former protagonists Makoto and Hajime make a return and guide the new protagonist Kaede through the game. Of course, Monokuma is present as well and these veteran characters break the fourth wall quite a few times. Still, players have the opportunity to meet the game’s new cast and learn a bit about them, even if none of the events actually take place.
In addition to learning about the new characters, players can learn about the new systems. The adventure segments more or less play out as they did before; players can move a cursor around the screen and pick objects to inspect. This time around, there is also a function that removes everything from view aside from objects and people that you can interact with. Another new system allows players to punch useless objects out of the way and off the screen.
As always, there is more to Danganronpa than just detective work and building relationships. Some time after a body is discovered, a class trial begins. This starts with the familiar non-stop debate in which players need to present evidence to refute/support a highlighted claim while the conversation presses ever onward. A new feature adds bonus points for hitting a small target that appears when slowing down time. After the first non-stop debate, the demo presents a series of new mini-games that test both the player’s thinking skills and reflexes.
Overall, this demo was quite the nice teaser. As for the full game, it will be available in North America on September 26, 2017. It will then release in Europe a few days later on September 29, 2017.
