There has been little news about the upcoming Captain Marvel movie since Oscar winner Brie Larson was cast as the titular hero. Finally, after reportedly approaching a number of different female directors, Marvel has found the perfect match. Variety reported that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will helm the upcoming film.
These names may not mean a lot to most people, but Boden and Fleck have an impressive resume. They directed Ryan Gosling in Half Nelson, a little-seen gem of a movie for which Gosling was nominated for an Oscar. Most recently they directed the equally brilliant Mississippi Grind featuring Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn.
Whilst it’s always great to hear an experienced hand like Joss Whedon or Matt Reeves is taking the helm of a big superhero movie, it’s just as intriguing to hear people like Boden and Fleck are taking control. They have not yet broken out into the mainstream but are talented small budget directors. Marvel and Kevin Feige certainly know how to pick them. Their track record includes the Russo Brothers and James Gunn, who came from relative obscurity into the Marvel big time and produced great results. Marvel will be hoping they hit the jackpot again with Boden and Fleck working on Captain Marvel and Taika Waititi whose Thor: Ragnarok looks like an absolute blast.
Variety also noted that the wait for a director for Captain Marvel was because they wanted to make sure the script was solid. A smart move no doubt, considering how many movies fall into disrepair with a botched script. With Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) on script duties, this is quite the talented team that Marvel are putting together for Captain Marvel.
