Bloodborne #1 Comic Review

Bloodborne #1 written by Ales Kot and art by Piotr Kowalski sets the stage for a gory horror adventure. We are introduced to a nameless Hunter who proceeds through Yharnam being attacked by beasts while searching for a Paleblood. The Hunter can’t tell if he is living in reality or a nightmare. The first issue is packed with panel after panel of action. Showing us the fear-filled streets introducing the reader to the same hopelessness the Hunter is feeling. I think Ales Kot did a fantastic job of bringing us into this world and it is better than most comic book adaptions of video games. The artwork is delightfully dreary and gloomy. A perfect setting for Bloodborne.

It doesn’t feel like there is a lot of dialogue between the characters. Instead, Bloodborne #1 is an introduction to a hopeless setting of despair. There may be some really good references between the game and the comic but truth be told I haven’t played the game yet. Even so, as a new comer to the story I am not left behind. This is where Ales Kot has done a fantastic job. In fact, he did such a great job I really want to dive into the game after reading the first issue.

If you can’t find issue #1 at your comic book store it’s because the comic book has been so successful that it has sold out. Titan Comics has already begun sending out second prints of the book and you may be able to have your comic store order one for you. There is always another option and that is purchasing a digital copy through Comixology. According to a press release quoted by Playstation Lifestyle Titan’s Brand Manager Chris Thompson said:

We’re so excited to see the swift and enthusiastic response to Bloodborne #1. Comic fans have embraced the popular team-up of Ales Kot and Piotr Kowalski, while gamers have embraced the opportunity to experience the world of the Hunter from a fresh perspective. FromSoftware’s tireless support has meant the right people found it and are wanting more! By rushing out this second-print of issue 1, those who missed it can still grab a copy alongside issue 2.
