This weekend the remake of the classic 1959 movie Ben-Hur was released. The movie actually had a $100 million dollar budget. So far the movie has only grossed a measly $11 million. The movie will not be able to make any of the budget in it’s domestic release with this small of an opening. This movie is basically one of the biggest disappointments of the year. All you had to do was play the Ben-Hur video game to know that this was going to happen. The two other movies that released this weekend also had similar openings. War Dogs and Kubo and the Two Strings opened this weekend at #3 and #4 respectively. War Dogs opened with $14.3 million while Kubo only made $12 million.
The gem at  the end of this Summer is still Suicide Squad. So many critics have hated this movie that most thought it would not make any money. This past week the movie passed that important $500 million worldwide mark. It really could be the last weekend that Suicide Squad sits on the top, it only made $20.7 million. Squad dropped over %52 percent in box office totals from last weekend. Fans still haven’t heard if WB will release a Joker cut of the movie when it comes to Blu-Ray. Sausage Party, the R-rated animated film opened in second place bring the domestic total to an amazing $65 million in two weeks. This Seth Rogan helmed movie has been one of those great surprise movies at the box office this year.
Weekend Top 5 Movies
- Suicide Squad $20.7 million
- Sausage Party $15.3 million
- War Dogs $14.2 million
- Kubo and the Two Strings $12 million
- Ben-Hur $11 million
Next weekend the movies are still looking stagnant. The next Mechanic movie along with Hands of Stone and Don’t Breathe will be released to under 3000 theaters. I really think Suicide Squad can hold on to a fourth and final weekend at the top. The end of Summer is here and it is being felt at the box office. Most of these movies I will watch when they become available either at the Redbox or Xbox Live. Let us know how you feel about these movies in the comment section below.
