Avengers: Endgame continues to be a money printing machine for Disney as the movie has managed to bring in another $63 million during its third weekend at the box office. That puts the film’s domestic box office total at nearly $725 million. History shows that only two other movies have brought in a domestic box office take of over $700 million. If you are curious, those movies would be Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avatar. Black Panther previously held the top third spot on that list but Avengers: Endgame has knocked that film down to fourth place. This also means that Disney owns the right to the Top 5 highest domestic grossing movies in history with Avengers: Infinity War holding the fifth spot. The House of Mouse also happens to own the rights to eight of the top 10 highest domestic grossing movies. If you’re curious about the worldwide box office total for Avengers: Endgame, it is currently sitting on a mountain of cash totaling nearly $2.5 billion which makes it the second highest grossing movie of all time just behind Avatar (though it is a close race).
With all of the news about the people over at Disney diving into massive piles of cash from all of those movies, you could be forgiven for not noticing that Pokémon Detective Pikachu quietly set a box office record of its own this weekend. Little Pikachu (with help from voice actor Ryan Reynolds) managed to bring in $58 million from the box office this weekend. This is the highest opening total ever achieved from a movie based on a video game; the previous champion was Lara Croft Tomb Raider which was released way back in 2001. Pokémon Detective Pikachu has worked its way on to the list of top 10 highest grossing video game adaption films on its third day at the box office with a worldwide total of over $112 million.
The Hustle starring Anne Hathawway and Rebel Wilson has secured itself at the #3 spot with a modest take of just over $13 million. Unsurprisingly, the audience for that flick was overwhelmingly dominated by women according to Box Office Mojo. It looks like the guys mostly stuck with Avengers: Endgame. Sony brought us The Intruder which brought in over $6.5 million during its second week at the box office. That puts the film in fourth place for this week’s list. The fifth place rank is held by Long Shot, a romantic comedy brought to us by Lionsgate Films.
And now for the pain. Poms, a film about a cheerleading squad made up of senior citizens, unsurprisingly did not do too well at the box office with a take of about $5 million. You just know that the fine folks over at STX Entertainment are wincing over this; especially after the relatively poor performance of Uglydolls last weekend.
It wasn’t all roses for Disney this weekend. The newly released Tolkien brought in a measly $2 million which was just enough to get into 9th place on this week’s list. This movie was literally sent out to die against a massively successful comic book movie and the likes of Pokémon Detective Pikachu.
Here are the top 10 highest grossing movies this week:
Avengers: Endgame
Pokémon Detective Pikachu
The Hustle
The Intruder
Long Shot
Poms
Uglydolls
Breakthrough
Tolkien
Captain Marvel
Next weekend we have three films making their theatrical debut. The most prominent film will be John Wick 3 – Parabellum followed by A Dog’s Journey. Rounding out the list will be The Sun is Also a Star from Warner Bros.
