It is safe to say at this point that the Gears of War movie has been firmly entrenched in development Hell. It has been a decade since the film was originally announced and we have seen more changes to the script writers, directors, producers and even studios than we can count. With all of the ups and downs we have seen over the years, it seems that the powers that be are not quite ready to give up on this movie. Writer F. Scott Frazier has been hired to work on the script. If that name seems familiar it is probably because you have seen other movies he was worked on such as xXx: Return of Xander Cage and Collide.
The very first announcement for a Gears of War came way back in 2007 from New Line Cinema. The first script for that project came from Stuart Beattie while Len Wiseman was tapped to direct the film. After the budget was reduced Wiseman moved on to other projects. Script development languished for five years until New Line Cinema gave up in 2012. Universal Pictures showed interest in 2016 and Dylan Clark was announced as the producer. The last known writer attached to the script before Frazier was Shane Salerno – the man who wrote the scripts for the Avatar sequels.
Frazier is a bit of a surprising choice since Collide did not exactly do well at the Box Office. To be fair, xXx: Return of Xander Cage performed a bit better.
