The past weekend, the movie Onward opened with a disappointing $39.1 million. Being that this is a Pixar/Disney film, the opening is lower than most of their movies. With the COVID-19 causing many theaters around the world to shut down, the worldwide totals will not be that high. The movie only grossed an estimated $28 million Internationally.
The Way Back came in at number three with an estimated $8.1 million. Universals horror movie The Invisible Man dropped to number two with $15 million domestically. This movie is sitting at $98 million worldwide with a budget of $7 million. It is the first new Universal horror movie that has done well at the box office and received positive reviews. That being said, The Mummy from 2017 grossed $409 million at the worldwide box office. I don’t see The Invisible Man reaching those numbers.
Sadly My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising dropped down to tenth as it brought in $1.7 million this weekend. Domestically the movie is sitting at $12.8 million, the worldwide total is $28 million. Onward has a great score on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is in the high 80’s by the critics. Of course, the movie is doing better with the general public as it sits around 96%.
Weekend Top Three
3 The Way Back $8.1 million
2. The Invisible Man $15.1 million
- Onward $39.1 million
Next weekend Bloodshot, The Hunt and I Still Believe are being released. With everything that is going on don’t expect huge numbers at the theaters for the next few weeks. Most studios could either release the movies online or push them back.
