The last official Shazam! trailer was released by Warner Bros. today and while it does not have much in the way of new footage, we do get a glimpse of what is presumably the big bad guy of the flick, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana played by Mark Strong. There also seems to be a stronger emphasis on slapstick comedy as a teen-aged Billy Batson attempts to learn how to use his new superpowers as the electrifying and buff Shazam (played by Zachary Levi) for good (or at least to score some booze). Check out the trailer for yourself below:
Okay, that really wasn’t a Batman cameo but it was still pretty damn funny.
With all of that said, I still do not really know what this movie is about. What does Dr. Sivana want? Is he trying to take over the world? Does he want to destroy it? Is Shazam! more of a comedy than an epic her flick like Aquaman or Wonder Woman? This trailer feels more like a parody of comic book movies and considering how badly the DC film universe has foundered, maybe a spoof would be a good thing right about now. What I do know is that this trailer along with the recently released Hellboy “Red Band” trailer means this is going to be a strange year for comic book adaptations. And I am perfectly okay with that.
Shazam! will be released on April 5th, 2019.
