This has to be the low point of the summer movie season. None of the movies playing this weekend made over $20 million at the domestic box office. For many, it’s a sign that summer is coming to an end and that many parents are preparing their kids for the back to school season. The Dark Tower barely took the top spot this weekend.
The Dark Tower adapts Stephen King’s popular series and it looked like the studio was hoping to be made into a movie franchise. This movie opened with $19.5 million as it took the top spot. Dunkirk and the Emoji movie both fell down one spot each. In a bit of good news for Stephen King this is the second highest opening right behind 1408 which made $20.6 million. The other movie that was released this weekend made it into the top five. Kidnap grossed $10.2 million in it’s opening weekend.
Weekend Top Five
5. Kidnap $10.2 million
4. Girls Trip $11.4 million
3. The Emoji Movie $12.3 million
2. Dunkirk $17.6 million
1. Dark Tower $19.5 million
I just really can’t get that excited for some of these movies. Like The Emoji Movie for instance, even though I enjoy T.J. Miller in Deadpool and Silicon Valley. Another Stephen King property is looking really good as we reach the final stretch of marketing for the remake of It (September 8th). The second Annabelle movie should easily get people into some theaters along with The Nut Job 2.
Now speaking of It, I feel like it would be great to link the trailer once again. I really do spend a good chuck of my day in a crew truck watching movie trailers over and over. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 will be coming to digital formats on August 8th and Blu-Ray on August 22nd. In honor of that, watch this fantastic music video featuring some of the cast.
