Review: Darling in the Franxx

Just how good is Darling in the Franxx? Well, before we get started, I would like to give those of you who may have not seen the series a brief synopsis. Darling in the Fanxx is set in the future where humanity has established mobile cities, plantations on a post apocalyptic earth. Within the city lay pilot quarters known as the “Birdcage” where the children lived. The children’s only purpose in life is to fight these giant creatures known as klaxosaurs. In order to fight these creatures, the children use two-pilot mechs called Franxx.

Darling in the Franxx has taken the anime community by storm with memes and inspiration to all who have seen it. Making its debut back in January, the series has been nothing short of spectacular. Though I must admit it did take a while for me to check it out. I started watching the series in March after an abundance of recommendations from various people which – lucky for me – I listened to and began my journey on catching up with this amazing show.

Art & Animation

Darling in the Franxx is one of the most well rounded series I have ever seen. In this 24-episode series it gives you a little bit of everything from romance, action, suspense, and  mystery all in one enriching story. Animation and art was generally good. It did have some down moments to when the artwork would take a dip and they would reuse some scenes but overall it was pretty good.

Music

The music in the series was well executed, immersing you into the story all the while playing with your heart strings during tragic scenes and then immediately turns around for a fight scene to get you excited. Not to mention the opening song ,”Kiss of Death” by Mika Nakashima, perfectly set the mood for every episode getting you ready for what’s to come.

Story

Now the series does have a few downsides when it comes to the story. For instance, some of the slice of life scenes can be pretty boring at times and the constant love triangle that always seems to end up more like an octagon can get pretty ridiculous and unnecessary. However, the main cast of characters were well written and the voice acting made it bearable. As the story progresses this become less of an annoyance and really makes the story that much more enjoyable.

Conclusion

Darling in the Franxx is almost everything an anime fan can ask for. It has it all while throwing twist and turns through each episode to keep you guessing. Though most of of these things may qualify as an all time great series, I’m just not sure its there yet. Still it’s a very good show and one I defiantly recommend to watch if you haven’t already.

If you’re interested in checking the series out please visit Crunchyroll, Hulu or VRV.
