Disney may have been dominating the box office all year long but the performance of World War 1 flick 1917is sure to bring a smile to the folks over at Universal. The movie brought in a whopping $36.5 million over the weekend. 1917 has actually been showing in a very small number of theaters for the last couple of weeks but this is the first weekend for its official release here in the United States. Winning two Golden Globe awards undoubtedly helped boost the hype for the Sam Mendes flick. Being nominated for the Oscars will likely give the movie some serious staying power. Do not be surprised if 1917 stays on top of the charts next weekend as well. I have not seen the film myself yet but I am told it is excellent. We do not often see films set during World War I anymore; it seems that most war movies based on actual historic events are set during World War II or Vietnam.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is thought to have brought in a little under $40 million worldwide this weekend. This should put the film at roughly $990 million worldwide.
Jumanji: The Next Level was third on the box office charts this weekend with about $14 million in domestic ticket sales and another $22.6 million internationally. The worldwide total should be a little shy of $675 million.
Paramount released Like a Boss this weekend and that film did not quite reach expected sales with $10 million in ticket sales. Warner Bros. came out with Just Mercy and that movie is thought to have brought in about the same amount of revenue. That is a shame as I hear Just Mercy is really good. It just could not compete with 1917 and Star Wars.

This week Martin Lawrence and Will Smith team up yet again in Bad Boys for Life. The doctor that speaks with animals will have an all new adventure in Dolittle. Those of you looking for a darker tale might like The Wave which stars Justin Long as an insurance salesman who is dosed with a drug and causes him to question what is real and what is fantasy. I will be reviewing Dolittle and I hope to catch >1917 if I can find some extra free time this week.
