Anthem Has Been Delayed

Bioware’s Anthem Possibly Delayed To 2019

When I first saw Anthem‘s gameplay reveal at E3 2017, I was blown away. The astounding visuals featured an incredible world with different creatures, seemingly a place ripe with mystery. Unfortunately, it looks like the projected release window of Fall 2018 might not be accurate and that Anthem has been delayed into Early 2019. Jason Schreier of Kotaku broke a story earlier, going in-depth on the struggles BioWare is facing internally regarding Anthem‘s development and expectations from EA.

Jason writes thatAnthem, which was announced at E3 2017, is now scheduled for release in early 2019, according to three people familiar with the project. The “fall 2018” window mentioned during that E3 announcement was “never realistic,” one source said.

This isn’t all though, as according to anonymous BioWare employees, progress has been slow due to a variety of reasons, such as difficulties with the Frostbite engine, a change of studio heads and more. Jason states that both BioWare studios, Edmonton and Austin, are focused on developing Anthem, with a new Dragon Age game in development however taking a back seat. Mark Darrah, executive producer of the Dragon Age series, is working on both Anthem and the next Dragon Age installment at the same time.

While this is disappointing news, obviously it’s better that a game be delayed for better quality than to release in a broken or inferior state. With all of the controversy that surrounded Star Wars Battlefront II regarding invasively-implemented microtransactions, BioWare needs to learn from the mistakes of other recent games. Hopefully we’ll find out more soon.
