Xbox One sales up 81% in May – The Witcher 3 best selling game

The latest NPD numbers are official and according to Microsoft, Xbox One console sales are up 81%. The Xbox One has been clawing back at the lead of their console competitors over the past month with double-digit growth year over year. Last month Microsoft launched the new Halo Master Chief collection bundle in White and it sold out in minutes.

Overall hardware sales for the entire industry were down 18%, and software sales down 25%. We might see the same thing during the month of June as people await new bundles and updated consoles at the E3 conference. Microsoft already announced that the new 1TB console with updated controller will go on sale on June 16th in select markets.

The Witcher 3 topped the game sales charts, with over 4 Million copies sold since launch. CDProjektRed also stated that the game is being played more on GOG than on Steam. Seems like Steam finally has a DRM free competitor and it’s making big inroads into that empire.

Top Selling Games for the month of May were:

1.) The Witcher III: Wild Hunt (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
2.) Mortal Kombat X (PS4, Xbox One)
3.) Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
4.) Minecraft (360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4)
5.) Splatoon (Wii U)
6.) Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (PS4, 360, Xbox One, PS3, PC)
7.) NBA 2K15 (360, PS4, Xbox One, PS3, PC)
8.) FIFA 15 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, Wii, 3DS, Vita)
9.) MLB 15: The Show (PS4, PS3)
10.) Super Smash Bros. (3DS, Wii U)

Halo 5 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 are on top of the pre-order charts as people eagerly await these two blockbuster games this holiday.

Microsoft’s press announcement on the news:

“Xbox One and Xbox Live continue to see strong growth in sales and engagement. Xbox One sales in the U.S. were up 81 percent over May 2014 and active global Xbox Live members, Xbox One and Xbox 360, were up 20 percent,” a Microsoft spokesperson said. “We are grateful to our fans for choosing Xbox One and for making Xbox Live the fun and vibrant community that is. We can’t wait to share more on the greatest games lineup in Xbox history at E3 next week.”

With E3 just around the corner, Microsoft is expected to announce several exclusive games over and above Halo 5, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Forza Motorsport 6. With the holiday jam-packed with exclusive games one wonders where you might find time to play all these games. Next year exclusives like Scalebound, Quantum Break, Crackdown, Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3 will land. It’s never been a better time to be a Xbox Gamer.
