Nintendo NX Will Be A Mobile Gaming System

Details regarding Nintendo’s mysterious NX console have emerged and it will be a powerful handheld console that can connect to a docking station for play on home televisions. From an article originally published by Eurogamer, the Nintendo NX will also have detachable controllers on either side of the system which will allow you to play your games while the system is propped on a table or desk with a built-in kickstand or while it is docked and connected to your home television. The detachable controllers can also be used for two-player games.

Eurogamer also reports that the system will also use cartridges as previously reported on TICGN. We do not have any details regarding the capacity of these cartridges but it is rumored that Nintendo has recommended 32GB versions to external developers. There will most likely be support for digital game distribution as well. Given Nintendo’s history over the last ten years, the Nintendo NX will likely use SD or Micro SD memory cards to store digital games.

One source has told Eurogamer that the NX will run on an entirely new operating system and not simply Android as early rumors suggested. This does not preclude the possibility that the operating system could be a forked version of Android similar to Amazon’s Fire OS.

The console will apparently be powered by a Tegra mobile processor. This means that it is unlikely that the NX will be backwards compatible with 3DS games. Devkits already in the hands of external studios are currently using a Tegra X1 which is the same chip used by Google’s Pixel C tablet though the possibility of Nintendo opting for the upcoming Tegra X2 processor should not be ruled out yet. There are no confirmed details regarding screen resolution on the handheld but the Tegra X1 processor is capable of 1080p output at 60 frames per second.

Nintendo is apparently choosing a simple marketing message for the Nintendo NX which will be centered on taking your games with you. This approach would undoubtedly be motivated by the lackluster performance of the Nintendo Wii U which is partly due to that system’s confused marketing campaign.

Zelda BOTW TICGN

As of now the only game confirmed for the Nintendo NX is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, there is speculation that popular Wii U games such as Super Smash Bros. and Splatoon will be updated and re-released on Nintendo NX.

TICGN will bring you more information regarding the Nintendo NX when it becomes available.
