By now, you may have heard that the Gamecube classic Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is being remastered for current generation consoles and mobile devices. Square Enix originally only said that the game would be releasing this winter, but not exactly when. We now have our answer: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered is coming out January 23rd, 2020.
As a fan of the original game, I was a bit disappointed to hear that it’s such a long way off. I had originally hoped that “this winter” meant it would come out in November. Maybe December, at the latest. However, my excitement for the release is greater than any disappointment.
I’m looking forward to reliving the fun that the original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles brought. If you haven’t played it, here’s a quick run-down. The game takes place in a fantasy world that’s mired in a deadly substance called ‘miasma’. The only way that civilization survives is by using a mystical substance called ‘myrrh’. The myrrh fights off the miasma, and everyone is happy. That is, until the next year when adventurers need to get more myrrh.
Players take on the role of adventurers who travel in a caravan going looking for myrrh. You can choose from one of four races and create a caravan with your friends. Then, you all set off to find some myrrh and keep your town healthy. However, there’s a bit of a twist. Players don’t just need myrrh to protect their homes, but they need it on the adventure as well. Everyone in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles has to stay within a dome created by a small chalice with enough myrrh for the caravan.
Trying to stay within the chalice’s boundaries created a lot of fun in the original game. Only having a tiny safe area to play in made the game hectic and fast-paced, but very rewarding.
Here’s to hoping that the remaster will be just as zany and fun as the original. Good luck on your caravan!
