Dory Reigns Supreme While The BFG Flops

This holiday weekend that one Disney movie with the family friendly fish has topped the box office once again. I was basically 100% percent correct in my guess in what would happen this weekend. The other Disney movie The BFG failed to beat Legend of Tarzan and Purge: Election Year at the box office. Sadly this may mean the end of Steven Spielberg being profitable as he once was.

Finding Dory picked up another $41.9 million this weekend brining the total to $372 million in box office receipts. The Legend of Tarzan actually fared well this weekend making $38.1 million in its first weekend. This really doesn’t give people who enjoyed this movie hope of continuing as a franchise. The movie cost over $180 million not including all that money spent on marketing. WB really needs the movie to do well in the international  market to some money back. The Purge: Election Year was another movie that released this weekend. This third movie actually tripled its budget by taking in $30.8 million in its opening weekend. Fans of the series can expect to see more from this franchise as it seems nothing can stop it from making money.

Movies like Warcraft, X-Men, and TMNT 2 dropped off the map. This weekends box office receipts combined  wouldn’t even make enough money to break into the top five movies. In fact take a look the top five movies this weekend.

Weekend Top Five

  1. Finding Dory $41.9 million
  2. The Legend of Tarzan $38.1 million
  3. The Purge: Election Year $30.8 million
  4. The BFG $19.5 million
  5. Independence Day: Resurgence $16.5 million

Next weekend Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates and The Secret Life of Pets will be releasing in theaters. The buzz for Mike and Dave is huge as Adam Devine and Zach Efron star as two brothers looking to impress a family that sees them as the problem at family events. Apparently this is based on a true story. The animated movie The Secret Life of Pets looks to take the top spot from Finding Dory. I see the same people who went to see Dory lining up to watch this family film. Also look for the Purge: Election Year to keep up with the rest of the competition as this is an election year, all the political marketing seems to be working.
