“Us” shatters horror film box office records

I can admit it; I was completely wrong.

Last week I wrote that while I expected the newest horror movie from Jordan Peele – Us, I did not expect the film to resonate with the average movie goer. Now that the weekly box office numbers have been released, I can see that I have a lot of egg on my face. Not only did Us topple Captain Marvel as the top grossing film in North American theaters, it has broken records as the highest grossing original horror flick in history. It seems that March was actually a solid month for movie fans.

Originally expected to bring in about $40 million USD during its launch weekend, Us actually earned a whopping $70.2 million USD – almost double the initial expectations. Even better for Jordan Peele, the movie has already become profitable as it was produced with a rather modest budget. Given the performance of both Us and Peele’s first film, Get Out, it is safe to say that Jordan Peele can now boast a certain amount of clout in Hollywood and should have no trouble getting financing for his next movie.

I have not yet seen the movie but I am told it is quite a creepy and unsettling experience; especially with the director’s attention to detail and the performance of Lupita Nyong’o as Adelaide Wilson.

Did you go to the movies over the weekend? Let us know what you watched and what you thought of it.
