This weekend the spinoff Hobbs and Shaw took over the top spot at the box office again. The new release Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark almost had the top spot with $20.8 million. Dora and the Lost City of Gold was unable to topple The Lion King as it debuted forth place. If the movie doesn’t pick up some steam this week, expect it to drop a few places.
Hobbs and Shaw jumped to $332 million world-wide. The movie currently sits at $108 million domestically. Expect the sales in this movie to sky rocket once it’s released in China on August 23rd. The Kitchen opened with a dismal $5.5 million in its opening weekend. It seems that the only thing that really will pump some cash into the box office is either a superhero movie or Disney owned property. It’s sad to see that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark or even Once Upon a Time in Hollywood can’t dominate the box office.
Weekend Top Three
3. The Lion King $20 million
2. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark $20.8 million
1. Hobbs and Shaw $25.4 million
Next weekend look for Good Boys, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, Blinded by Light, and Where’d You Go Bernadette in the theaters. Opening this Wednesday is Angry Birds 2, the movie no one ever asked for. Expect that movie too easily open in the top three. The Summer is almost over and we are just a few months closer to the Joker origin movie. Hopefully the movie is worth the wait.
