Moviegoers and comic book fans alike are no doubt eager for James Gunn to begin work on another Guardians of the Galaxy film but the man is not yet finished with DC Comics. He is hard at work on The Suicide Squad but you should not assume that this will be a sequel to the divisive 2016 movie. In fact, the new film will be a reboot for the franchise. To be fair, that was probably apparent with the decision to cast Idris Elba as Deadshot. If you really want to get right down to it, we do not even know if Margot Robbie will sport the dual-colored pigtails again as Harley Quinn.

This juicy little tidbit comes to us via Peter Safran – the producer behind Aquaman and Shazam!. “First of all, we don’t call it Suicide Squad 2 ‘cause it’s a total reboot so it’s The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it. It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script,” said Safran.

Wow. I know that there are a lot of very valid criticisms against the 2016 Suicide Squad film; I made a lot of them myself. It just seems awfully quick to do a complete reboot of the franchise. It look like the powers that be are taking a lot more care with the DC Cinematic Universe than we saw in years past.

The Suicide Squad is scheduled for a worldwide release on August 6th, 2021.
